The Captive is symbolic of hundreds of women and children who were stolen from the settlers in the nineteenth century. This child reflects the horror of having witnessed the murder of her parents a few hours ago and an all night ride into captivity and enslavement. Here the captors parade their prize back at the main camp at dawn.
