In 1888 an English lady, Mary Jacques, stayed about two years on a Texas hill country ranch as a paying guest. The vivacious lady was a horse aficionada in the extreme, once reprimanded by the sheriff for racing her horse on a county road. She and her traveling companion were returning from a shopping trip in San Antonio on a stagecoach driven by a friend from Junction.

A few miles out of town he asked Mary if she would like to 'take the reins', and of course she did and too light weight to handle the brake, she called her lady friend up to be the 'brake person'.

A Mexican freighter passed them on the road and arriving in San Antonio he hurried into the stagecoach office and said, "Senor, your driver must be hurt, he is riding in the coach and two senoritas are driving it".
